Chinese FDI annual flows to Africa have been increasing steadily over the last two decades, with a surge from USD 75 million in 2003 to USD 5 billion in 2021 and have exceeded those from the US since 2013. China’s private sector is now leading trade and investment in Africa, with new initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area promoting the growth of regional value chains by offering Chinese businesses access to a larger unified African market.
With solid institutional frameworks and sound governance, Mauritius has established a reputation as a secure, reliable and competitive financial hub in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Mauritius International Financial Centre (IFC) has played a key role as a hub for driving investment to Africa, with more than 450 private equity funds domiciled in the IFC and investing in the continent, and close to USD 40 billion investments directed to Africa through Mauritius as of June 2021.
