There are many women who can inspire us..... but the best are those around us, making things happen every day.
These are some of the people you will have heard of who inspired me along the way:
Madelaine Albright, Secretary of State in Bill Clinton’s US government from 1997 to 2001. This was the highest position a woman had ever reached in US politics at the time. She famously remarked, “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.” She paved the way for others.
Margaret Thatcher – from a different end of the political spectrum – and you don’t have to agree with her policies but she certainly smashed the glass ceiling and believed completely in herself. She showed a small girl like me that women can reach the top.
Serena Williams – wow. The ultimate competitor, I love the way she has taken ownership of her career. She proved that hard work and dedication pay off.
Amanda Gorman – the most memorable part of the recent US inauguration by far. Her poem The Hill We Climb was a joy. She gave hope to young women everywhere.
Beyoncé - fierce. When I’m feeling unsure I think “what would Beyoncé do?” and I’m inspired to be bold. She pursued her own agenda and didn't care what others thought.
These women are all wonderfully inspiring. But at the end of the day I take my real inspiration from regular women. Those around me who run homes, families, do a great job at work, wipe tears, mop up spills, create smiles, conjure up food, make things happen, hold it all together. People in my family, my friendship group, my colleagues. People just like you.
So I would say to you: little things matter and you can make a difference. Give yourself a pat on the back, celebrate yourself. We can’t all be world beaters but we can love what we do and have a positive impact on the lives of those around us.
