Job description

The Manager – Legal will provide specialist support to devise legal policies and processes, formulate responses to queries and problems and handle legal assignments. In addition have shared supervisory responsibilities for legal team, monitor their daily tasks and to coach them.

The role holder has one reporting relationship:

  • To the Head of Legal (task assignment / planning of work / staff matters / content and quality of work / contacts and relationship / core business processes)

Tasks

  • To work closely with Company Secretary on corporate secretarial matters
  • To assist and provide legal support to internal committees including Risk Forum
  • To advise on client queries mainly of legal nature
  • To liaise with relevant authorities and external counsels, as and when needed
  • To provide in-house legal trainings
  • To be responsible for and/or manage and provide guidance on legal review/drafting of legal documents
  • To undertake legal research
  • To supervise and assess the team work and assignments
  • To conduct Staff Appraisals and recommend career development plans to the Head of the Function
  • To prepare legal opinions and do legal drafting including handling the legal queries in most efficient and expeditious  manner
  • To supervise the work of the legal team and their deliverables
  • To draft legal circulars and standardise other policies and procedures in accordance with local laws and international best practices
  • To work on specific projects
  • To be involved in legal risk management advising the company and its officers
  • To ensure protections of information assets of IQEQ Mauritius and to abide by the ISMS in place at IQEQ Mauritius
  • To keep track of legal tasks and ensure billing is done promptly

Qualifications

Education / professional qualifications

  • A Law graduate from a reputable university , preference will be given to post graduation degree

Background experience

  • Minimum of 5-6 years’ managerial experience  or Lawyer with at least 6 years’ experience working in a law firm or having working experience as an in-house lawyer.
  • Experience in the financial services sector is a pre-requisite.
